How do I find a gap in the market for my product?

The first port of call for any new product development project is to take a look at what already exists on the market. You need to look in a variety of places such as online bespoke retailers – perhaps locally and globally, larger FMCG retailers, independent high street retailers etc. to get a really good picture of what is currently happening in the market place.

Once you’ve established what’s already out there how does your product fit into the mix? What are you doing that is different? Is your product competitively priced or does it have a unique property that demands a higher retail price. Perhaps your competitor product isn’t meeting the needs of it’s customers but your new product does! How are you going to communicate that through the design and marketing of your product?

What are the stages of product development?

Depending on what type of product you are looking to bring to market there are broadly 7 steps to bringing a new product to market:

Yorkshire Brand Stories

Idea Generation:

This phase involves brainstorming, market research, and gathering insights to generate ideas for new products or improvements to existing ones.

Yorkshire Brand Stories

Idea Screening:

Not every idea is feasible or aligned with market needs. This stage involves evaluating ideas based on criteria like market potential, feasibility, profitability, and alignment with brand values.

Yorkshire Brand Stories

Concept Development and Testing:

Once the promising ideas are identified, they are developed into detailed concepts. These concepts are then tested with target consumers to gather feedback and further refine them.

Yorkshire Brand Stories

Business Analysis:

This stage involves a more thorough analysis of the product’s potential profitability. Factors like production costs, marketing expenses, sales forecasts, and sales projections are assessed to determine if the product is financially viable.

Yorkshire Brand Stories

Product Development:

This phase involves designing, engineering, and developing the product based on the finalized concept. Prototypes are created and tested extensively to ensure functionality, usability, and quality.

Yorkshire Brand Stories

Product Launch:

This is the stage where the product is finally launched into the market. It involves the full-scale production, marketing, distribution, and sales efforts to make the product available to consumers.

Yorkshire Brand Stories

Post-Launch Evaluation:

After the product is launched, its performance is closely monitored. This evaluation helps in understanding how well the product is meeting consumer needs and expectations. It also informs future improvements or range extensions.

How do I launch a new product?

Well first of all you need to think about where and how your product is going to be sold? Online? At a fair or in a shop? Through a 3rd party retailer or wholesaler? Depending on where your product is going to be sold will determine what resources you will need to properly launch your product, so here are a few ideas to get you started:

York Cocoa Works
Perfect Product Photography

Can be used to promote your products online, showcase through digital marketing, share with press and customers to bring your item to life. Think product staging, how can you use photography to illustrate your USPs, show how it’s used or showcase your secret ingredients, how can photography tell your brand story?

How are you going to verbally talk to your customers about what your product is / does / solves? Your copy can really tell your brand story and all the wonderful things your product offers so take some time to get this right. If the raw ingredients are sourced from a local monastery – tell people about it! If everything you offer is handmade – shout about it! Don’t hold back, if you are unsure what to write have a go at selling your product to a friend over the phone and get them to repeat back to you what they liked about your pitch.

Where is your product going to be sold? If in the digital world how many images do you need to bring your product to life, could video play a vital role? If in real life, is there space for additional props, information boards or branding displays? If it’s through a third party retailer or wholesaler can the product be housed in something that makes an impact on shelf – does the front of your product do all the heavy lifting when it comes to standing out from your competitors?

Once you’ve got the basics in place you’ll need a marketing plan that reaches your target audience. Consider all the tools at your disposal from digital shop fronts, social media and newsletters to banners, press releases, collecting and sharing reviews, networking events, business listings, advertising and more! There are so many options out there, just make sure you approach your launch with a plan and budget and don’t forget to make the most of it when its ‘NEW’ news!
